The Retreat Experience: A Journey into Peak Productivity

You know that feeling after a vacation where you feel like you need another vacation just to get back to baseline? Unfortunately, I can’t relate because I’m STILL riding high from the productivity vortex we created in Cartagena, Colombia last week!

The formula for these retreats does something to the human mind, body, and soul that increases our capacity for life! From the morning routine, to coworking sprints, to evening adventures, this experience revealed how accessible our maximum potential truly is.

Starting the day with a sound bath, breathwork, and movement harmonized the group on a physiological level. Each of these practices helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, leading to a sense of calm and heightened cognitive function. This collective endeavor put us all in a state of calm focus which made it easy to transition into the workday.

All afternoon you could hear people typing with vigor, passionately leading conference calls, and closing deals! The energy of our coworking sprints is INFECTIOUS – literally. It’s known as the "social contagion" effect. When surrounded by focused and driven individuals, our own motivation and determination are amplified. This phenomenon is attributed to the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine, which enhance our cognitive functions and drive. The shared energy and commitment in the workspace create a positive feedback loop, leading to heightened productivity levels for all participants.

I’d be remiss not to mention the communal meals and leisurely walks through Cartagena's charming streets – which revitalized us both physically and mentally. Sharing a meal triggers the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "bonding hormone." This hormone fosters trust and empathy, which are essential for effective collaboration. Additionally, taking breaks for leisurely walks enhances blood flow and oxygenation to the brain, leading to improved cognitive function and creativity.

Cultural explorations as the sun set enriched our experience, providing the perfect balance to our productive days. Not only is it just plain fun to try new things, but exposure to new environments, cultures, and experiences stimulates neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to form new neural connections. This process enhances creativity, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability - all of which are crucial for productivity.

In Cartagena, we discovered the boundless potential of collective effort. With the right people, practices, and playtime, the momentum is limitless.
